World Diabetes Day - What’s the disease all about?
November is American Diabetes Month and November 14 is World Diabetes Day. The United Nations will light its New York Headquarters in blue to mark the day.
In 2007, approximately 23.6 million persons in the US had diabetes.
The theme for 2008 campaign is ‘Diabetes in Children and Adolescents’.
It is very difficult for one to change a particular quality of theirs. Similarly, it is difficult to change one’s diet. But as science has advanced, it is our duty to have knowledge about various diseases and do whatever is possible (even in a small way) to prevent ourselves from getting it.
In this article, I will be highlighting important symptoms of diabetes mellitus and what we can do to prevent us from getting this chronic disease.
Remember that once a person gets it, it stays for lifetime.
Diabetes mellitus is a condition where the blood sugar levels are elevated. Following are symptoms suggestive of diabetes mellitus.
1. Increased thirst because of excessive fluid uptake from the tissues.
2. Increased urination because of excessive thirst.
3. Increased appetite because the muscles are depleted of energy.
4. Weight loss because the fat stores are depleted.
5. Fatigue because the cells in the body are depleted energy.
6. Blurred vision because of excessive fluid uptake from the tissues.
7. Slow healing sores or frequent infections: Sometimes this can be the sole presentation. Because of increased sugar in the blood, infections are more common. The bacteria are able to thrive better in a sweet medium. For women, bladder and vaginal infections are common.
8. Tingling hands and feet because of nerve damage. There will be loss of sensation in hands and feet. While walking, slippers/sandals might slip out of your feet.
9. Red gums: Diabetes decreases the ability to fight germs, so sores and swollen gums may be the presentation.
#1 Regular physical activity is the mainstay of prevention. It lowers the blood sugar levels and increases uptake of sugar by the muscle. Aerobic exercise is useful as well.
Examples:
- Taking the stairs rather than an elevator.
- Get off the bus a few stops early and walk the rest of the way.
- An evening walk is always good.
#2 Diet Modification
- Eat more of fiber like fruits, vegetables, beans, whole grains and nuts.
- Limiting sweets and chocolates.
- Eating short and frequent meals.
- Eating less fatty food like fries, burgers.
- Limiting alcohol usage.
- Use non-caloric sweeteners like saccharin.
#3 Lose extra weight
-Research has shown that losing extra weight decreases risk of developing diabetes later in life.
