Causes of Skin Aging

Skin aging is caused by the fall in elasticity. Aging skin also receives less blood flow.

Research has shown that there are two types of aging - internal and external.

Internal aging is caused by genes which we inherit and external aging is caused by environmental factors such as exposure to the sun’s rays.

Internal aging begins in our mid 20s.
The signs are:
- Wrinkles
- Thin and transparent skin
- Loss of underlying fat of the face.
- Dry skin that may itch.
- Graying hair that eventually turns white.
- Hair loss.

Genetic control is responsible for the normal aging process. Some notice their first gray hairs in their 20s, others do not see graying until till 40s.

External Causes:

1. Sun exposure: Ultra-violet rays are responsible. Just a few minutes of exposure each day over years can cause noticeable changes to the skin like freckles, age spots, fine wrinkles, loose skin. “Photoaging” is the term dermatologists use to describe aging by sun’s rays.

It depends on:
- Your skin color (more in fair people).
- Your history of long-term sun exposure.

2. Smoking: It breaks down proteins in your skin resulting in premature aging of skin. Smoking also decreases blood flow to http://www.ciggyfree.comthe skin. Cigarette smoke depletes your body of Vitamin C, which is a key ingredient for maintaining your skin plump and moist. Research has shown that a person who smokes 10 or more cigarettes a day for a minimum of 10 years is statistically more likely to develop deeply wrinkled skin than a nonsmoker.

3. Pollution: The gases from cars and othe rvehicles and other pollutants in our environment can cause aging.

4. Facial Exercises: If you perform them to maintain a youthful-looking appearance, it is time to stop. Repetitive facial movements lead to fine lines and wrinkles.

5. Lack of sleep: Too little sleep makes you look and feel tired and this is shown first on the face as dark circles under the eyes.

6. Sleeping Positions: Resting your face on the pillow in the same way every night for years leads to wrinkles.

7. Lack of exercise and a sedentary life contributes to aging skin as it decreases blood flow.

8. Exposure to cold weather contributes to aging skin.

9. Lack of moisture also causes skin aging.

10. Alcohol use and stress are other indicated factors.
