http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2265/2236645004_0052a9106a_m.jpgAsthma is a lung disease where your airways get narrowed due to an exposure to an allergen. It causes breathlessness, coughing and chest tightness.

The only absolute way of getting treated is to avoid the allergen. Drugs are not a cure for asthma. They are useful only in a severe case. In milder cases, it is best to control asthma with various other methods rather than drugs because taking these drugs can lead to addiction. Besides, drugs used for asthma have a lot of side-effects if used on a long-term basis.

General Measures:

#1 Stop smoking.

#2 Reduce emotional stress. Keep yourself cool.

#3 Meditation and breathing exercises help strengthen the airways and lungs.

#4 Exercise regularly. Keep yourself fit.

#5 Use an air-conditioner. This reduces exposure to dust which can be a trigger factor.

#6 Change bedsheets, pillow covers often. Clean carpets, sofas. Regularly clean your room.

Dietary Measures:

#1 Research has proved that drinking carrot juice helps. It decreases mucus in your body.

#2 Eating fish every week helps. Fish contains omega-3-fatty acids which is helpful.

#4  Drink a lot of water everyday. With more rapid breathing, it is easier to get dehydrated.

#5 Avoid spices and chillies. They can trigger an attack.

#6 Research has proved that eating onion regularly helps prevent asthma.

#7 Honey is considered useful.

#8 Garlic is good too.

It’s best to make a note of all these food items and try to add them to your daily diet.
