What is ‘Male Menopause’?

Published by dratiffarid under Uncategorized Edit This

Male MenopauseMale menopause implies decreased levels of the male hormone, testosterone. In general, older men have lower testosterone levels than younger men. But, the reduction can be rapid in some underlying medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes and obesity.

The testes make testosterone after receiving signals from the brain. Any damage to this pathway (trauma to the brain) can lead to decreased testosterone levels. Also, the testes may be damaged due to an injury, infection (mumps) or during surgery, radiotherapy.

Common symptoms experienced are reduced sexual desire, decrease in spontaneous erections, depression, fatigue and muscle weakness.

It can be treated by hormone replacement therapy. But it carries an increased risk of prostate cancer. So, it is best avoided. Other symptomatic treatment with anti-depressants may be necessary. Lifestyle changes including healthy diet and regular exercise help decrease the extra pounds.

#1 Eat healthy food. A good nutritious diet including vegetables and fruits help.

#2 Regular exercise is important.

#3 Incase you have any of the above symptoms, make sure you talk to your doctor. Laboratory investigations may be necessary to rule out other conditions like diabetes, depression and others.

It’s important for the doctor to diagnose this condition early. This will require your co-operation. You should tell your doctor the symptoms you experience. Some blood tests may be mandatory.

It’s best to get evaluated rather than have a decline in your work performance or relationship problems which are all due to the symptoms of male menopause.
