Gout is a type of arthritis seen usually in the big toe. It presents as a swelling associated with pain and stiffness. You can be symptom free for several years between attacks.
Excess uric acid in the bloodstream is the main culprit.
Either it can be:
1) Due to excess production of uric acid.
2) Due to decreased excretion by the kidneys in urine.
Eventually uric acid crystallizes and deposits at the base of your joint.
