Diabetics rarely die due to diabetes
According to the American Diabetes Association, people with diabetes rarely die due to diabetes. Rather they die due to associated conditions. Diabetics have a 20% chance of a heart attack over a 7-year period. Other cause of death is a stroke (due to decreased blood supply to the brain).
A lot of them develop other complications which are not life-threatening. The commonest of them which I’ve seen at the hospital is a non-healing ulcer which needs amputation of the leg.
Diabetics have decreased sensation throughout their body. This is more common in the feet and hands. While walking, the person may sustain injury to the foot but will be unaware of it (due to loss of sensation). It can lead to formation of an ulcer which if unnoticed, progressively increases in size.
Also due to increased blood sugar levels, diabetics are more prone for infections. Fungal infections of the hand and leg and quite common.
There can be associated atherosclerosis where a major blood vessel can get blocked. This can lead to decreased blood flow to the foot leading to ulcer formation.
Other complications seen are kidney damage and blindness.
It is advisable to keep blood glucose levels within normal limits. Glucose levels should be frequently checked.

Great information. I’ve learned to live by my meter to maintain my blood sugar level. It’s inter testing I can eat half a baked potato. The whole potato gives a sharp rise, them plummets.
Take care. Roxie

I must take your advice on this as my Grandad was diabetic. BTW you are awarded blog of the week, so please come to qiman’s world and read the review of your blog, you deserve it.
As I have stated before, all the women other than myself, in my family are diabetics.The older ones all died from complications brought on by their diabetes. Mainly the kidney problems. Keep up the articles on diabetes, one of the worst killers out there.
My mom is a type 2 diabetic. For years she did not monitor her blood levels properly. Now, she has been diagnosed with Alzheimers, but the neurologist says she also likely has some vascular dementia. It’s really sad that she did not take proper care of herself earlier, then she might be in better shape today. Isn’t type 2 preventable with proper diet and excercise?
Good blog,

My dad’s father died of diabetes related complications in the mid-70’s. He was admitted to the hospital for symptoms related to a diabetic coma, but eventually died from an aneurysm. I worry about my dad’s health - he does walk every day which is good, but his eating habits . ..
@yanjiaren: Thanks
@Caregivingdaughter: Ofcourse, it is preventable.
