Sunglasses are more than just a fashion accessory

Published by dratiffarid at 12:34 am under Uncategorized Edit This

Sunglasses protect your eyes!It is a general notion that sunglasses are a fashion accessory in the summer. But, that’s not it. Sunglasses are important to keep your eyes healthy as well. They protect your eyes from bright light as well as ultraviolet radiation (UV) from the sun.

Ultraviolet exposure leads to eye diseases such as cataracts and skin cancers. They can eventually lead to blindness.

It’s important to know that sunglasses should be worn even when it’s not bright outside as UV radiation can filter through clouds.

Sunglasses are equally important if you are taking medications which increase sensitivity to light (called photosensitivity). Antihistamines used in cold and allergy medicines, paracetamol/aspirin used to control pain and inflammation and certain antibiotics like tetracyclines cause photosensitivity.

Obviously it is better to choose a pair of sunglasses that fit well. But also make sure you choose one with 99% protection against UV-A and UV-B. Avoid small sunglasses which do not completely protect your eyes and the surrounding skin.

I didn’t realize that cold medicine could make you photosensitive. Do sunglasses lose their effectiveness with age?

  2. dratiffaridon 25 Jan 2009 at 1:58 am edit this

Non-photochromatic lenses do not lose their effectiveness over time.

Photochromatic lenses will lose some of their range of operation. However, they will still provide full protection against UV light.

It’s important not to leave your sunglasses on the dashboard in your car. This will damage the rubber pads at the side.

I’m still looking for the perfect pair of sunglasses!! The worst for me is driving at night, the headlights coming at me, or from behind, makes my eyes water half the time.

You know I never wear them but I find that lately, over the past few months, light bothers me eyes which it never had in the past so I may just look into getting a pair. I guess I’m at that age :)

This is good to know. I wear my sunglasses all of the time. I wear them out more than my regular glasses. :)

Thanks. I’ve been wanting one of those “baby sunglasses” that has the straps. Those are neat.

PS- That’s so kind of you to advertise my site on your blogroll! :) Thank you. I’d like to create that widget… tips on how you did it?

So the ones you buy from Tesco are not advisable, right?

Something I’ve always wondered is if the light enhancing shades cricket players wear have any detrimental effects on vision ie eye strain.

yes, but we have to be careful to not over due sun screen and sun glasses as it deters our bodies from getting needed vitamin D.

I’ve always wondered, does wearing contact lenses make your eyes more vulnerable to the sun’s damage?

  12. daniaon 26 Jan 2009 at 9:18 pm edit this

Same here, i wear contacts and oh my ,, with sun and snow makes it extra bright,, so sunglasses are always by my side.

I even have my children wear it,, even my 3 years old,, it really helps protect there eyes.

    @ Roxie: No, it isn’t . Lol!

@ Nipsy: Yes, that happens to a lot of people. At my place, we have only 2 lanes and it’s even worse. So, I just try to stay on my lane at night and just be alert! :)

@Jodapoet: Did you get your intra-ocular pressure checked recently? From what you mentioned, that’s the first sign of glaucoma. It can be an early onset. I suggest that you see your local doctor and get your eye pressure checked.

@Esper: There’s no widget. I manually made it. Just make a text box and add the links.

@Hindley: Yes, they are not advisable.
Regarding the light enhancing shades, research is still going on. But the benefits are far more, that’s why they’re used.

@Caregivingdaughter: There are so many contact lenses available. Some of them are tinted which protect your eyes from UV rays. I still advise my patients to wear sunglasses even though they are using contact lenses.

@Dania: That’s good. Children’s eyes are more vulnerable to damage by UV rays than adult’s eyes.

    @Michellem: Thank you.
