Lifestyle Modification for acid reflux

Published by dratiffarid at 3:35 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

GERD

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux is the abnormal back flow of stomach acid and juices into the esophagus. It occurs when the valve (sphincter) between the lower end of the esophagus and the stomach does not close tightly enough.

People usually complain of heartburn. It’s pain behind the breastbone which is usually burning type and increases on bending forward. It also leaves a bad taste in the mouth. It can also keep you awake at night and affect sleep in the long term.

Lifestyle modification is an integral part of prevention of GERD. It’s not the cure but it does relieve symptoms and prevent recurrences.

#1 Quit smoking. Nicotine relaxes the valve between the esophagus and the stomach. So, there’s a back flow of stomach acid and juices into the esophagus leading to heartburn.

#2 Avoid overeating. Overeating puts extra pressure on your stomach and it increases the chances of heartburn.

#3 Losing weight helps in the long run.

#4 Decrease alcohol and caffeine attack as they relax the valve.

GERD#5 Eating smaller, more frequent meals.

#6 Certain food items aggravate symptoms. Avoid citrus fruits, chocolate, fried items like french fries, garlic and onions.

#7 Avoid spicy food.

#8 Avoid tight clothing (tight belts) over your stomach.

#9 If you need to pick something from the floor, bend your knees and pick it up.

#10 Raise the head end of your bed. Place a block below. Sitting up allows gravity to help food drain back into your stomach.

    If you have lower to mid back pain and you have acid reflux or indigestion you could also try going to the chiropractor. Sometimes back problems can lead to a whole mess of symptoms that seem unrelated.

    Oh my, I had the WORST acid reflux when I was pregnant.

    I had problems with acid reflux after taking the first dosage of a very strong antibiotic in order to clear up an infection before a root canal. I hadn’t realized you *had* to stay sitting in an upright position for at least half an hour after taking this medicine. I’d taken my dose and went to bed - ended up burning a small hole in my esophagus (I think.)

    The pain was incredible. Luckily my regular doctor was able to figure out what had happened and helped me get relief. Between the root canal and the heartburn/acid reflux, I’d rather have the root canal a second time!

    Thanks for visiting my site and commenting on my banner.
    I have been experiencing a lot of heart burn lately, but mine is in my throat and not in my chest. Any time I have ever heartburn, I have never had the pain in my chest, only my throat.

    Is that something that isn’t heart burn?

    I do have that happen at times. However since I’ve cut the caffeine and sleep now with two pillows due to vertigo, the acid reflux has subsided. Thanks for all the tips. And, thanks for commenting on my blog. I do love Indian music as well. I will listen to anything and everything except country - I just can’t stomach that.

    Great information. I eat smaller frequent meals because I’m diabetic. I feel amazingly better when I do, and it’s much easier to control my blood sugar level. I don’t have GERD but I know plenty of folks who do.

    I’m working on my Blogroll. May I add you? It’s not a link exchange, so nothing expected in return. Please let me know.

    Thanks.

    @Kristy: The pain can occur in the throat as well. It can cause distaste in the mouth.

    @Joda: Cool. :)

    @Roxie: Sure you may.

    @Cathe: Sour stomach is acid indigestion. It occurs due to excess acid in the stomach. The prevention is almost as above. Avoid spicy food, fried food items, caffeine. Smoking is strictly prohibited. Eating small, frequent meals always helps.

    The additional point is to eat a lot of fruits. They contain fiber and help in digestion. (Banana is the best.)

    There are some herbal medicines (especially the ones with peppermint oil and spearmint oil) that are useful.

    If there is intense stomach pain, he may have to use a hot water bottle on his stomach.
